About Gary Lucks, JD, CPEA, Author, Organizer, Activist

Gary Lucks, JD, CPEA, isn't just watching the fight for democracy from the sidelines. He's been at the forefront throughout his adult life. Now, as the struggle to save democracy and the rule of law from the forces of authoritarianism heats up to an unprecedented degree, Gary is releasing his second book, “We Are the Power” (coming mid-April 2026). It leverages his extensive experience in grassroots organizing to demonstrate how regular citizens can come together to right America’s ship of state.

As an environmental attorney, policy advisor, and community organizer, Gary has spent his career turning expertise into action. He has written environmental policy briefing papers for California Governor Gavin Newsom and the late U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, co-authored leading environmental law guides, and published over 50 environmental law articles. He also brings that same passion into the classroom as faculty at The Presidio Graduate School's sustainability MBA program, inspiring the next generation of changemakers.

But Gary's impact goes far beyond the courtroom and the classroom. As the founder of Progressive Action East Bay and Resistance Action East Bay (RAEB) Indivisible Group, he has built one of California's most active grassroots networks – mobilizing communities, raising millions of dollars, and delivering critical support to Democrats in swing districts across the country. When democracy is under threat, Gary organizes.

As an author, he shares everything he's learned. His debut book, “You Are Not Alone: Your Roadmap to Effective Political Action, is a short, practical resource guide for those who want to do more than sit on the sidelines.

Gary Lucks' new book, “We Are the Power,” brings experience, hope and urgent guidance to all Americans who want to preserve our democracy. It doesn’t ruminate or explain the problem. Instead, it provides a “how to” turn our collective strength into power by mobilizing, unifying and taking action to save our democracy – now and at crucial junctures in front of us.

As an author and pro-democracy activist, his commentary has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle, and his op-ed on preserving democracy was picked up by newspapers across the country, including the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Sacramento Bee. Gary is a sought-after speaker and podcast guest on topics ranging from grassroots organizing to the part each citizen can play – whether new to activism or a seasoned organizer – in protecting our democracy, resisting authoritarianism, and building the future we all deserve.

“We can be alone in despair. Or we can come together to make a difference for the pro-democracy movement.”
